Is trust really not a crime? This question forms the core of my journey and advocacy. As I navigated the treacherous waters of the justice system, both as a direct victim and as collateral damage, I confronted the harsh realities of shame and stigma that envelop victims. Our dignity and privacy are stripped away, not just by the offender, but also by the justice system, the media, and, perhaps most painfully, by some friends and family. Amidst this turmoil, I recognized my position of relative privilege and felt a profound duty to champion the cause for those ensnared by the compounded challenges of systemic injustices, such as racism and poverty, alongside their victimization. My mission became clear: to advocate for a more compassionate and equitable system for all victims.
Through this journey, I gleaned invaluable insights into the workings of the justice system and the profound impact of restorative justice. I learned the importance of empathy, understanding, and, most importantly, trust—not just as concepts but as actionable principles that can bridge the chasm between victims and offenders. My experiences underscored the potential for healing and transformation within our justice system, advocating for approaches that honor the dignity of all involved. These lessons form the bedrock of my message: a call to reevaluate our perceptions of justice, emphasizing healing over punishment, and trust over fear.
I've authored bestselling memoirs and passionately advocate for restorative justice, sharing my journey to help others heal and forgive. Globally recognized, I lead retreats that explore healing from trauma. In my private practice, I specialize in supporting survivors of sexual assault and their families, employing innovative therapies like EMDR. I also consult on trauma-informed practices in legal and media fields. My life's mission is to guide individuals from trauma to a place of super growth, embracing humor and beauty in everyday moments.
I also find that fighting for justice is best done wearing fabulous earrings, or that perfect shade of F-U-schia.
I live and love in Toronto, Canada with my twin daughters.
